Veal - Canada

The Canadian veal industry has worked diligently over the years in educating the Canadian public on veal production and dispelling any myths that might exist concerning feeding regimes or housing methods. In Canada, almost all veal is derived from milk-fed or grain-fed calves which are slaughtered at approximately 5-7 months of age. Currently, veal calves less than two weeks of age may be slaughtered in some provincially registered meat establishments or in federally registered establishments if the product is to be exported. The volume is minimal. Removing the minimum age requirement prescribed in the Meat Inspection Regulations is not expected to increase the volume of veal calves slaughtered at less than two weeks of age. There is no economic incentive to do so and no submission suggested the contrary. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency agrees that public education and information are important elements to a better public understanding of agricultural issues.
